Build Your Own Insect Hotel

Check out our step-by-step guide or watch the short video below as nature enthusiast and Operation WildNation ambassador Sarah Sarsfield shows you how to build your own insect hotel and give the insects in your garden somewhere to live during winter

For those out there who aren’t feeling crafty, you can buy insect hotels that are ready to go and open for business. Add your own style and paint it yourself!

What You’ll Need:

Sticks

Pine cones

Bark

Bamboo (if available)

Plastic bottle cut into cylinders

String

Step 1

Cut your plastic bottle into cylinders. This is a great way to waterproof your hotel and recycle a plastic bottle.

Step 2

Collect your sticks, twigs, pine cones, bark and bamboo. Arrange them into a bundle and place inside one of your plastic containers. The more variety inside the better, as it creates more unique spaces for insects to live. If you have it, you can add some dried grass or hay.

Step 3

When you are happy with your design, you can wrap some twine or string around your hotel and hang it up.

Step 4

Make sure to place it somewhere nice and sheltered where it won’t get blown around too much! Equally you can place it on the ground.
