How to Kill Moss on Lawns: Practical Advice for a Healthier Lawn
As people begin to spend more time outdoors again, one of the most common questions I’m asked is how to get rid of moss and weeds on lawns. Moss is particularly prevalent in Irish and UK gardens, where damp weather, heavy soils and shaded areas create ideal conditions for it to thrive. While moss can be stubborn, it can be controlled effectively with the right timing, products and ongoing lawn care.

When Is the Best Time to Treat Moss on Lawns?
The best time to treat moss on lawns is between March and September, when grass is actively growing and able to recover quickly after treatment. During colder months, moss may still be visible, but treatments are far less effective because growth slows and soil temperatures remain low.
I normally treat my own lawn twice a year, once in early spring around March or April, and again in early autumn in September or October. Treating at these times keeps moss under control and prevents it from building up over winter. This approach also reduces the risk of bare or weakened patches appearing in the lawn later in the year.
Temperature plays a crucial role in successful moss control. Most treatments only work properly when temperatures are consistently above 12 degrees Celsius, so it’s worth waiting for a mild spell rather than rushing the job too early. Why Does Moss Develop on Lawns?
Moss develops in lawns where grass struggles to grow. Poor drainage, compacted soil and shaded conditions all create an environment where moss can establish itself easily. Lawns that are naturally acidic are also far more prone to moss, as grass prefers a slightly higher soil pH.
Cutting grass too short is another common cause. Scalping the lawn exposes bare soil, allowing moss spores to take hold quickly, particularly during mild and wet weather. Over time, moss competes with grass for nutrients and moisture, weakening the lawn and making it more vulnerable to weeds.
Addressing these underlying issues is just as important as applying a moss treatment, as it helps prevent the problem from returning year after year. If you want to get rid of stubborn moss on patios and outdoor flooring, be sure to visit our Patio Moss Guide for more tips and advice.
What Products Should I Use to Stop Moss on My Lawn?
There are a number of effective products available for killing moss, and the best choice often depends on the size of your lawn and how you prefer to garden. One product I highly recommend is Mo Bacter. This is an organic, slow-release lawn fertiliser with added magnesium that works in a very different way to traditional moss killers. Instead of burning moss and turning it black, Mo Bacter contains beneficial bacteria that break moss down naturally and convert it into nutrients for the lawn. As a result, there is no black mess and no need for raking afterwards.
Mo Bacter is sensitive to temperature and should only be applied when it is at least 12 degrees. It works best when spread in damp conditions. I recommend cutting the grass about two days before application to expose the moss and weeds, and then mowing again a couple of days after treatment to tidy the lawn and encourage fresh growth. One bag covers around 100 square metres, which is roughly the size of a typical town garden. While it can be spread by hand, a push along spreader ensures a more even finish and saves time. It usually takes about two weeks to show results and also improves soil health over time. Although it is safe for pets and wildlife, I still advise keeping animals off the lawn for 24 hours after application.
For gardeners with larger lawns or those looking for a combined treatment, Evergreen Extra 4 in 1 is another very popular option. This product feeds the lawn while killing moss and common weeds in one application. It also contains a water-retention gel, which helps lawns cope better during dry spells. One bag treats up to 400 square metres, making it particularly suitable for larger areas. As with all moss treatments, it works best once temperatures have exceeded 12 degrees and grass is actively growing.
Do I Need Lime for My Lawn?
Applying lime to your lawn every few years can play an important role in keeping moss at bay. Lime helps to raise the soil’s pH, making conditions less favourable for moss and more suitable for healthy grass growth. It also helps release nutrients already present in the soil, improving overall lawn performance.
I usually apply lime to my own lawn about every two years, depending on soil conditions. A simple pH testing kit can help determine whether your lawn is too acidic and whether lime would be beneficial.
If you plan to spread lime, it’s important to leave at least two weeks between applying moss or weed treatments and adding lime, as applying them too close together can reduce their effectiveness.

With a little regular care and attention, moss doesn’t need to take over your lawn. By treating at the right time, using the correct products and improving soil conditions, you can enjoy a healthier, greener lawn for many years to come.

- Apply twice a year to keep lawns moss and weed free
