How to Plant a Mini Herb Garden

Have you been considering growing some herbs in your garden, but don’t know where to start? Our horticulturist Malachy has shared his top tips for planting herbs so let us talk you through it! Herbs are a great addition not only for their usefulness in the kitchen, but also for providing great fragrance to the area where they are set.

Malachy’s No.1 tip when it comes to growing herbs is to use a little trough or planter, which will be easily accessible from your kitchen as you will be most likely to make the most out of them in your meals. As for what herbs will work best in this mini herb garden, his top picks are as follows;

  • Mint – Apple, Moroccan or Spearmint
  • Lemon Balm
  • Vietnamese Coriander
  • Parsley
  • Golden Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Fennel
  • Chives

Try to place the taller herbs like the chives and coriander to the back and the smaller ones, such as the parsley and mint to the front, to help your planter look it’s best.

Potting Tips:

Another important thing to remember when planting your herbs is the compost. Malachy recommends using a mixture of Jacks Magic and Horticultural Grit to create free draining compost, which is the best setting for herbs to thrive in.

Keep Using Your Herbs!

When you keep your herbs clipped and pinched it prevents them from becoming overgrown and going to flower as they will not be as juicy or flavorful if they reach that stage.

If you simply can’t get through the amount of herbs in your mini herb garden, a great tip from Malachy is to clip the herbs and freeze them in an ice cube tray with a little water for use at a later date.

When you are happy that you have added all your favorite herbs to your planter, Malachy advises that you add a layer of horticultural grit to the top, which will help prevent the likes of algae and moss from growing.

Caring for your herbs:

Feed your herbs every two to three weeks using an organic feed – Malachy like the seaweed feed in either liquid or powdered form to ensure the herbs are at their best.
